The County Government of Uasin Gishu has confirmed a case of Mpox (Monkeypox), sparking a public health alert across the region.

In a notice issued by the Department of Health Services, residents were urged to remain alert and strictly follow preventive measures to curb the spread of the virus.

Mpox is a viral zoonotic disease caused by the monkeypox virus. It presents with symptoms similar to smallpox, though it is clinically less severe.

The disease can be transmitted from person to person through close physical contact, body fluids, respiratory droplets, or contaminated materials such as bedding and clothing. It can also spread from animals to humans through bites, scratches, or contact with infected animal fluids.

Health officials have listed common symptoms, including fever, headache, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, chills, exhaustion, and a rash that typically starts on the face and spreads to other parts of the body, including the palms and genitals.

Residents experiencing any of these symptoms are urged to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest health facility. They are strongly discouraged from self-medicating or interacting with others until they are cleared by a health professional.

To prevent further spread, the Department of Health has advised the public to avoid close contact with suspected or confirmed Mpox cases, maintain proper hand hygiene using soap or alcohol-based sanitizer, and refrain from sharing personal items such as towels, razors, and clothing.

Those caring for infected individuals are encouraged to use protective equipment and isolate themselves if they show any symptoms.

The Ministry has assured the public that it is closely monitoring the situation and working hand in hand with health partners to prevent further spread.

Public cooperation and adherence to official updates are critical in managing the outbreak. For emergencies, residents are advised to contact the County Disaster Hotline at 0710644644 or Ambulance/Health Services at 0754027027.

In a strong message to the public, the county health office emphasized that “Your safety is our priority. Let’s stay alert and protect our families and communities.” More updates will be issued as the situation unfolds.
