Mothers in Kapseret Sub County Demand Action After String of Child Disappearances
Hundreds of mothers from Langas and Yamumbi Estates in Kapseret Sub County held a peaceful demonstration on Wednesday to demand answers following the disappearance of 3-and-a-half-year-old Mercy Waithera Gachuri.
Mercy vanished while playing with other children outside her mother’s shop in Yamumbi. Witnesses reported seeing an unidentified male, described as wearing a maroon jacket and black trousers, approach Mercy. The man reportedly lured the child away with a sweet and was later seen carrying her on his shoulders before disappearing.

Mercy’s distraught mother Agnes Wangui Kamau recounted the harrowing ordeal. “I had just left the shop briefly on Saturday when I returned to find my daughter missing,” she said through tears. “We haven’t slept or eaten since. Mercy was a joyful child who knew her siblings’ names. She was wearing a yellow t-shirt, green trousers with white polka dots, and croc shoes.”
The desperate mother continued, “We’ve reported her disappearance to all police stations and even visited children’s homes and rescue centers. I plead with whoever has her to please bring her back to us.”
This incident marks yet another disturbing disappearance in the area. The number of missing children under eight years old has risen to over 30 in recent times. The local community is outraged, accusing child welfare officers and security officials of complacency.
“We are urging the Uasin Gishu County Security Committee to investigate this child abduction racket immediately,” declared Bishop Paul Mwangi. “Those responsible must be apprehended, and our children must be brought home safely.”
Uasin Gishu County Children’s Officer, Simon Orenge, confirmed the concerning number of missing children. However, he offered a glimmer of hope, noting that over ten children previously reported missing are now at the Eldoret Children’s Rescue Center awaiting reunification with their families.
Frustrated by the lack of progress, residents of Langas and Yamumbi Estates have threatened to form vigilante groups to protect their children if the police fail to ensure their safety.
Local leaders, including area Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi and Langas Ward MCA Francis Muya Mwangi, have been called upon to address this escalating issue.
