The Ministry of Health has revoked internship placements for 42 Bachelor of Science (BSc) Nursing students following a serious breach of academic regulations involving the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) and ten public and private universities.

In a press statement released on 21st July 2025,, the Ministry revealed that the affected students were unlawfully submitted for internship before completing their academic programmes ,a direct violation of the Nursing Council Act and guidelines established by the Public Service Commission (PSC).

As a result, the Ministry has withdrawn all internship letters issued to the students and instructed them to immediately vacate their duty stations as investigations get underway.

The Ministry has also taken swift administrative action, suspending Dr. Lister Onsongo, the Chief Executive Officer of the Nursing Council of Kenya, pending a comprehensive internal audit of all 2,098 BSc Nursing interns in the 2025/2026 cohort.

Ms. Ann Mukuna, the current Director of Standards and Compliance, has been appointed to oversee operations at the NCK in the interim.

Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of healthcare training and deployment.

“All individuals found culpable, whether at the Ministry of Health, the NCK, or within the leadership of the implicated universities, will be held fully accountable,” he stated.

The Ministry underscored that the matter is being treated with urgency to uphold professional standards, ensure compliance with statutory requirements, and protect the rights of both nursing graduates and the general public.

This development sends a strong signal to training institutions and regulatory bodies to strictly adhere to academic and professional standards in the healthcare sector.
