Kylian Mbappé has admitted he would be disappointed if he fails to win the Ballon d’Or, saying his individual performances have given him confidence that he deserves the prestigious award.
Speaking to RFI, the France and Real Madrid forward said he believes he has enjoyed a strong individual year and has met what he considers one of the key criteria for the award.
“I’ve had a great individual year and I know that’s the most important criteria for the Ballon d’Or, now I believe,” Mbappé said.
Mbappé pointed to his scoring record across competitions as another reason for his confidence.
“I was the top scorer in all competitions. I think it could be a good and right year for me to win it. I feel it deep down,” he said.
The French forward also acknowledged the disappointment that would come with losing out after believing he had done enough to claim the prize.
“I would be disappointed to not win it. When a competitor doesn’t win, he is disappointed, so my level of trust is high,” Mbappé said.
He added that missing out would affect his competitive instincts.
“My competitive spirit would be hurt in that case,” Mbappé said.
Mbappé’s comments underline his confidence ahead of the Ballon d’Or decision, with the forward putting emphasis on individual performances and goalscoring output.
The Ballon d’Or is awarded annually to the player judged to have produced the outstanding overall individual performance during the relevant period. The award is determined by an international voting process involving journalists from selected countries.
