A man in Kapsabet, Nandi County, died on Wednesday after falling into a 50-foot borehole while trying to retrieve a jerrican. The police identified the victim as Geoffrey Mutai and said he had gone down the family borehole to recover the water container when the fatal accident occurred.
According to eyewitnesses and authorities, Mutai is thought to have slipped while descending, causing him to plunge deep into the well. He died on the spot due to the impact. Community members, together with emergency responders, tried to rescue him but were unable to reach him in time. His remains were later recovered and taken to the mortuary for postmortem examination.
The incident sparked renewed concern over the number of unprotected boreholes in rural areas and appeals from residents for stricter safety guidelines and better reinforcement of such water sources to avert future tragedies.
In another incident reported in the same county, a night guard died, and another was seriously injured after armed robbers targeted coffee berries at Coffee Land Outgrowers Limited in Singhor. The Wednesday dawn incident claimed the life of 40-year-old Japheth Kurgat, while his colleague sustained severe head wounds.
The store’s doors were found ajar and coffee bags littered outside when other workers reported for duty later that morning. The two guards were soon found unconscious in one of the rooms. Kurgat was pronounced dead at the scene, while the injured guard was rushed to hospital, where medical staff confirmed he was in a stable condition.
The police have since mounted active investigations and assured the public that they are pursuing leads to bring the perpetrators involved in the break-in and killing to book.
Meanwhile, in Rodi, Homa Bay County, locals were shocked when they stumbled upon a human arm dumped in a sugarcane plantation in Kogwe village. The limb-cut off above the wrist and tied inside a bag-was found by villagers who alerted authorities.
Detectives say distinctive markings on the severed arm are being analyzed to ascertain whether they are real identifiers. With the victim’s identity not determined, the circumstances in which his arm got dismembered are still unknown. The arm was taken to the mortuary for forensic evaluation as investigations continue.
In yet another worrying incident reported in Othaya, Nyeri County, a 40-year-old woman died under circumstances that were not clear. The deceased, identified as Bilha Kibira, was found lying lifeless in her bed by her 12-year-old daughter on Tuesday morning. Although traces of blood were found on her pillow, police noted no external injuries. Relatives said Kibira had a history of epilepsy, but detectives say a post-mortem will be crucial in establishing the actual cause of death. Authorities across all counties have pledged to continue investigations into establishing the facts surrounding these incidents and providing answers to affected families.
