Maisha Namba: Kenya’s Next-Generation Digital ID!
–The 3rd Generation ID card system is versatile, supporting both web-based and offline identity authentication-
The ambitious Huduma Namba project, initiated by the Jubilee government under the leadership of former President Uhuru Kenyatta and then Deputy President William Ruto, who currently holds the presidency, has seen significant changes.
With an initial cost of Sh10 billion, the project has now evolved into a state-of-the-art digital identity database known as Maisha Namba.
Maisha Number was officially commissioned on September 29, 2023, marking a new era in Kenya’s approach to digital identification.
One of the notable advancements in Maisha Number is the introduction of the 3rd generation identity card. This new card is designed to replace the existing national identity card and employs cutting-edge cryptographic technology to securely store personal data within the card.
This technology represents a significant leap forward in security compared to the previous Huduma Namba system, which relied on chips or QR codes. The 3rd Generation ID card system is versatile, supporting both web-based and offline identity authentication for use by various public and private agencies.
While Kenya is moving forward with Maisha Number, the controversial Huduma Namba project has not been forgotten. New proposals within Kenya’s Parliament, in the form of a bill, aim to introduce several changes to the Huduma Namba digital ID scheme. Launched in 2019, Huduma Namba has stirred persistent debates and discussions.
So, what exactly is Maisha Number?
Maisha Number is a unique personal identification number that will be assigned to every Kenyan citizen upon their registration, particularly at birth. This number will remain with an individual throughout their entire life, effectively serving as a lifelong personal identity number, from birth to the eventual passing away. Maisha Number is poised to become the birth certificate for newborns, effectively replacing the need for traditional paper certificates as an official proof of birth.
Moreover, Maisha Number is not just about identification; it will also streamline access to crucial government services. For example, it will simplify processes like enrollment in educational institutions (NEMIS), access to healthcare through the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), and, upon reaching the age of 18, it will transition into an official ID number. This multifaceted approach promises to improve the efficiency of government services.
In the unfortunate event of an individual’s passing, Maisha Number will play a pivotal role. It will generate a unique death certificate number, which will help the government maintain an accurate record of deceased citizens. This, in turn, will assist in planning and ensuring that resources and services are appropriately directed to those who are still alive.
As Maisha Number ushers in a new era of digital identification and access to government services, it represents a significant step toward streamlining administrative processes, enhancing security, and improving the overall efficiency of public services in Kenya.
