A middle-aged man narrowly escaped death after an enraged mob descended on him for allegedly stealing a small speaker worth less than Ksh 1,000 from a liquor shop at Kaposya Shopping Center In Uasin Gishu County.
Duncan Mwangi, a well-known figure in the area, was caught red-handed while attempting to flee. Residents described him as a “notorious gangster” linked to multiple theft cases in Munyaka and Kaposya Estates. His two accomplices managed to escape and remain at large.
According to an eyewitness, Madam Faith, the three men entered the shop pretending to buy alcohol. “Two of them distracted the shopkeeper by asking about different liquor brands, while the third, Mwangi, grabbed a speaker. When I noticed, I raised the alarm, and the two ran away. The residents managed to grab one,” she recounted.
Upon being caught, Mwangi was subjected to mob justice. Angry residents kicked and beat him, accusing him of being part of a gang that has been terrorizing businesses in the area. “This is not the first time we are seeing him stealing. People are tired,” one resident said.
The shop owner, confirmed that she had reported previous theft cases involving the suspect. “I recognized him immediately. He has been stealing from shops around here. This time, the community decided to act before the police came,” she stated.
By the time the police arrived, Mwangi was unconscious. Officers intervened and took him to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital for treatment before processing his case. “The suspect will face the law after receiving medical attention,” an officer at the scene said.
Mwangi’s elderly mother arrived in distress after learning about her son’s beating. “I have warned him several times to change his ways, but he never listens,” she lamented.
Meanwhile, police have launched a manhunt for the two fugitives who managed to escape. Authorities are urging residents not to take the law into their own hands and to report criminal activities to the relevant authorities.
