A 28-year-old barber and gospel musician from Donholm, Jose Jay, has etched his name in Kenya’s entertainment world as the first winner of Next Superstar Kenya singing competition. The final was staged at Charter Hall over the weekend when he emerged victorious and took home the very much sought-after KSh 1 million prize.

Journey to Victory

The competition, launched in May, attracted thousands of participants from across the country. Over 14 weeks, the participants passed through multiple rounds of eliminations, showcasing their range of vocals, stage presence, and creativity. From an enormous pool of aspiring musicians, it was ultimately narrowed down to six top-notch finalists: Jose Jay, Brenda Morii, Albert Okumu, Andy Saharan, Jambia, and Rennic.

At the last tally, Rennic was the first runner-up and took home a brand-new motorcycle, while Jambia took the third position, taking home custom-made jewellery worth KSh 150,000. All of the contestants demonstrated determination, passion, and irrefutable ability, and the judges had to make a hard choice.

Jose Jay’s Emotional Story

Jose Jay’s win was a result of determination and faith. Talking after being declared the champion, he reflected on his past difficulties.

I have participated in some competitions in the past but never won at the top. I decided to give it a second chance this time and thank God because He showed me that prayers are answered,” he explained with tears.

He emphasized that Next Superstar Kenya gave him a lot more than just a financial award—it gave him exposure and a chance to encourage others. “Music is my life, and I will continue pursuing it for as long as I live. Winning this has shown me that perseverance always pays off.”

Empowering the Creative Economy

Talking of the broader significance of the event, Collins Okoth, Strategy and Planning Director at Kenya Film Commission, praised the initiative. He further stated that the government increasingly sees the creative economy as among the biggest drivers of growth and is interested in supporting platforms that build young talent.

“This competition is a vivid example of how art can empower the youth, open doors to opportunities, and establish the creative industry,” he said.

A Night of Celebrations

For many of them, the evening not only crowned a champion but also established that the upstarts from Kenya are ready for center stage—proof that with dedication, vision, and the proper stage, aspirations are made into realities.
