Prominent lawyer and former Law Society of Kenya president, Nelson Havi, has officially tendered his resignation from the ruling United Democratic Alliance party, which is led by President William Ruto.

Havi has now confirmed his exit in a formal resignation letter dated November 7, 2025, addressed to UDA Secretary General and copied to the Registrar of Political Parties. The lawyer, however, did not disclose the reasons behind his decision to part ways with the party.

“I hereby give notice of resignation as a member of United Democratic Alliance (UDA) with effect from today and in exercise of rights conferred upon me by Section 14 of the Political Parties Act, Cap 7D of the Laws of Kenya,” Havi’s letter partly read. “Kindly notify the Registrar of Political Parties of my resignation to facilitate the removal of my name from the party’s membership register.”

Havi’s exit from UDA comes barely four years after he joined the party in 2021. At the time, the vocal lawyer hit the headlines when he announced his political ambitions on the UDA ticket, declaring his interest in the Westlands parliamentary seat in the 2022 General Election.

He was warmly welcomed into the party by then Deputy President William Ruto, among other senior UDA officials as the movement gained momentum in advance of the elections. Havi would later be defeated in the Westlands MP race by ODM’s Tim Wanyonyi.

Though still unknown, possible reasons for his resignation could range from shifting political alignments to discontent with the current direction of the ruling party. Other observers say that it might be in pursuit of possible plans Havi may have to refocus attention to his legal career or try new political opportunities.

Havi, known for his bold and sometimes controversial political commentary, has made his voice heard in both legal and political circles. His entry into politics through UDA marked a major step for professionals seeking to join active political roles.

Attention now shifts to what his next step will be, following his exit whether he is joining another political outfit, returning fully to the legal profession, or just taking a break from active politics.

The UDA Secretariat and senior party officials had not issued any public statement acknowledging or commenting on Havi’s resignation.

His departure adds to a growing list of politicians who have recently distanced themselves from UDA, amid emerging internal differences and shifting alliances within Kenya’s political landscape.
