The scene of the incident: Turbo Sub-County Hospital in Uasin Gishu

The Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) Uasin Gishu branch has issued a stern call for the immediate arrest and prosecution of a primary school teacher following an incident at Turbo Sub County Hospital on Tuesday. The teacher allegedly assaulted a nurse while she was on duty, sparking outrage within the healthcare community.

According to reports, the teacher demanded to jump the queue at the hospital to prioritize her child for immunization, despite numerous other patients from neighboring Likuyani and Lugari sub-counties patiently waiting for service. When the nurse declined the request, the teacher resorted to insults and physical assault.

The situation escalated when the teacher began filming the nurse with her cell phone, prompting a scuffle. The nurse managed to seize the phone before reporting the incident to the Turbo police station.

Branch Secretary Kleen Kimutai, alongside union chairman Francis Chepwony and Vice Secretary Kelvin Limo, strongly condemned the teacher’s actions. They emphasized that unless the culprit is apprehended and prosecuted within 72 hours, the union will consider withdrawing all healthcare workers from the hospital.

Kimutai stressed that the teacher should face charges for harassment and causing a disturbance, highlighting the need for a safe working environment for healthcare workers in county-run hospitals.

Echoing Kimutai’s sentiments, Chairman Chepkwony urged the county government to address the issue promptly and ensure the protection of healthcare workers from such incidents in the future.

Dr. Peter Okiriama, the Medical Officer of Health in charge of Turbo Sub County, confirmed the incident and stated that it had been reported to the police. He emphasized the importance of holding the perpetrator accountable for their actions and ensuring the safety of healthcare workers.

The KNUT’s stance underscores the zero-tolerance policy towards violence and harassment against healthcare professionals, emphasizing the importance of respecting the vital work they do.
