The National government has been asked to put in place strategies that will help to improve the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF).

According to the National secretary general of the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and  Dentist Union (KMPDU) Dr Davji Atellah, improving NHIF, will help the current high cost of healthcare.

Speaking to Hubz Media in Eldoret town, Atellah has also asked elected leaders to come up with an initiative that will see the needy in the country be enrolled on NHIF.

“Leaders should prioritize and ensure that every person has a particular social protection from NHIF to ensure that the cost of health care gets down,” said Atellah.

He noted that there are families that are unable to access health services because they lack insurance coverage.

“As a doctors union, we believe that for doctors to actually work and be happy with their services there must be families that can access the health care,” said the KMPDU boss.

He further challenged insurance companies to focus on providing value for their customers in accessing health services, rather than blocking them.

The KMPDU Secretary General also asked county governments to employ more health workers and specialists, especially in Level 4 and Level 5 hospitals.

He said with more health workers in county hospitals, there will be improved health services for Kenyans.

According to KMDPU, there are at least 5,000 health workers who are unemployed across the country.
