Kevin De Bruyne has expressed his surprise and disappointment after Manchester City decided not to offer him a contract extension, despite his desire to continue with the club under the same terms.
The 33-year-old midfielder, who has been instrumental in City’s success over the past decade, revealed that he had not received any communication regarding a new deal throughout the season.
“There was a bit of shock when I found out,” De Bruyne said. “I hadn’t received any offer from them the entire year, and Manchester City made their decision. Obviously, I was a bit surprised, but I have to accept it.”
De Bruyne joined Manchester City in 2015 from Wolfsburg and has since made over 400 appearances, contributing significantly to the team’s achievements, including six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and a Champions League victory.
Despite battling injuries this season, he managed to make 23 league appearances, providing ten goal contributions.
The Belgian international emphasized that he still feels capable of performing at a high level. “I still feel I have a lot to offer. I know I’m not 25 anymore, but I still feel capable of doing my job,” he stated.
As his contract approaches its end in June, De Bruyne is considering his options, taking into account sporting ambitions and family considerations. He remains open to continuing in the Premier League or exploring opportunities abroad, with interest reportedly coming from clubs in Major League Soccer and Europe.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola acknowledged the situation, noting that the decision regarding De Bruyne’s contract was made by the club’s management. “It’s up to the club. It’s not my business,” Guardiola said.
