The Senate has officially gazetted a Special Sitting scheduled for August 20, 2025, to deliberate on the impeachment charges brought against Kericho Governor Eric K. Mutai.

The announcement follows a formal communication from Kericho County Assembly Speaker Patrick Mutai, which was received by Kingi’s office on Monday.

The message reported the August 15th Assembly vote to impeach Mutai on several serious allegations including the misuse of public and donor funds, abuse of office, and approval of irregular payments to contractors.

“Friday, 15th August 2025, the Kericho County Assembly, vide its resolution and pursuant to Article 181 of the Constitution of Kenya, Section 33 of the County Governments Act, and Standing Orders 70 and 70A, resolved to pass the motion to impeach H.E. Dr. Erick K. Mutai from office,” the letter read.

All 33 Members of County Assembly (MCAs) voted in favor of the motion, following a dramatic day-long debate during which Governor Mutai resisted hard. It is the second bid to oust him from office.

Impeachment motion had been tabled by Sigowet Ward MCA Kiprotich Rogony, who accused the governor of presiding over payment of Sh85 million to contractors for non-existing or incomplete projects illegally.

But Mutai has strongly denied the charges, calling them politically motivated.

By procedure, the Senate will reject or reject the County Assembly decision based on the evidence presented. If it happens, Mutai will be officially removed from office.
