Kenya has recorded a historic milestone in skating after Kevin Kiarie Ruhiu, also known as Kelvin Kiarie, secured two medals at the International Challenge Cotonou Speed and Inline Freestyle Skating Championship held in Benin in early April 2026.
The talented athlete, who competed as the sole representative of Kenya and financed his own participation, delivered an outstanding performance against strong international competition. His determination and skill saw him clinch a gold medal in the Freestyle Battle category and a silver medal in the Classic Slalom category.
Kiarie’s achievement is particularly remarkable considering the limited support available to skating in Kenya. Competing as a self-sponsored athlete, he demonstrated resilience, discipline, and passion for the sport, qualities that propelled him to the podium on the international stage.
The gold medal in the Freestyle Battle category showcased his creativity, balance, and technical mastery, while the silver medal in the Classic Slalom category highlighted his precision and control. His performance has not only elevated his personal career but also placed Kenya on the global map in inline freestyle skating.
Speaking after the competition, Kiarie expressed gratitude to supporters who encouraged him despite the challenges. He also called for increased investment in skating and other emerging sports in Kenya, noting that many young talents lack exposure and resources.
His success is expected to inspire upcoming skaters across the country, proving that with dedication and hard work, Kenyan athletes can excel in non-traditional sports. As Kenya celebrates this historic achievement, sports stakeholders are being urged to recognize and support athletes in diverse disciplines to nurture future champions.
