Kenya has recorded a historic milestone in skating after Kevin Kiarie Ruhiu, also known as Kelvin Kiarie, secured two medals at the International Challenge Cotonou Speed and Inline Freestyle Skating Championship held in Benin in early April 2026.
The talented athlete, who competed as the sole representative of Kenya and financed his own participation, delivered an outstanding performance against strong international competition. His determination and skill saw him clinch a gold medal in the Freestyle Battle category and a silver medal in the Classic Slalom category.
Kiarie’s achievement is particularly remarkable considering the limited support available to skating in Kenya. Competing as a self-sponsored athlete, he demonstrated resilience, discipline, and passion for the sport, qualities that propelled him to the podium on the international stage.
The gold medal in the Freestyle Battle category showcased his creativity, balance, and technical mastery, while the silver medal in the Classic Slalom category highlighted his precision and control.
