A Kenyan police officer is dead after being involved in a road accident in Haiti, while eight others were injured. The accident took place on Sunday while conducting an operation in a Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS).

MSS Spokesperson Jack Ombaka clarified that the accident happened at around 5 pm. Two MaxxPro vehicles were used for the operation. The other vehicle was towing the first one when it suffered a mechanical failure, leading to the accident.

The wounded officers, as well as civilians, were rushed to the Lambert Santé Hospital in Pétion-Ville. The physicians testified to the death of one Kenyan officer and a civilian.

Eight MSS officers were wounded by Ombaka, three of whom are critically injured. They will be flown to the Dominican Republic for appropriate treatment after receiving initial treatment at Aspen Level 2 Hospital at the LSA 2.

He extended condolences to the grieving families of those who lost their loved ones in the tragedy.

The National Police Service (NPS) also confirmed the occurrence. It indicated MSS, in liaison with the Haitian National Police (HNP), is set to repatriate the officer’s body back to Kenya. NPS also undertook to ensure the injured are receiving good medical care. The family of the deceased officer has already been informed.

Kenya is leading the MSS mission in Haiti. The team was dispatched over a year ago to pacify the country. But the conditions in the Caribbean nation have only been worsening. Combat gangs now control almost every department of Port-au-Prince, the capital.

The MSS had planned to send 2,500 officers to Haiti. To date, only approximately 1,000 officers from six countries have been sent. More than 700 officers from Kenya have been sent.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has complained about the mission recently. In a letter, he wrote that Haiti remains neglected and underfinanced. He warned that the MSS does not have the resources to deal with the crisis.

Haiti’s troubles worsened after the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2021. The killing deepened political and social instability. A presidential transition council took power in 2024 after Prime Minister Ariel Henry stepped down. The council has promised elections before its mandate ends in February 2026.

The UN says the violence in Haiti has claimed at least 3,141 lives in the first half of this year.
