A dramatic rescue mission unfolded in Tana River County on Wednesday evening after a man was rendered stranded by rising floods at Kolati-Tula. The Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) has confirmed that their emergency response team successfully rescued the man who was left stranded after the waters surged suddenly after rains pounded the area.
In a statement released by the aid agency, the man had made several distress calls after being cornered by the rushing floodwaters. The persistent heavy rain, which is part of the long rains that have affected several parts of Kenya, had caused rivers in the region to burst, cutting roads and isolating some villages.
As the distress call was received, the Kenya Red Cross swiftly dispatched a rescue team to the location. The team, boats and safety gear at hand, battled the strong currents to move closer to the victim. The organization indicates that the rescue operation was conducted at about 11:45 p.m., and the man was successfully evacuated to safety.
He was rescued and later reunited with his family,” the Kenya Red Cross confirmed in a statement uploaded on its official X (formerly Twitter) account.
The firm commended the speed of its disaster response team and urged citizens to be cautious since ongoing heavy rain is wreaking havoc in different parts of the country. Many places in the coastal and northeastern counties, including Tana River, Garissa, and Kilifi, have witnessed flooding, displacement, and destruction of property in the past few days.
In its advisory, Kenya Red Cross warned residents against attempting to cross flooded roads, riverbanks, or wading into running water, stressing that it is very risky. “We advise residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant, stay away from flooded sections, and never attempt to cross running water,” part of the statement said.
The relief agency also emphasized the necessity of taking action on early warnings provided by the Kenya Meteorological Department and local authorities. It also called for community intervention to help support ongoing rescue and relief efforts against affected households.
This new rescue underscores the critical role of the Kenya Red Cross in responding to emergencies across the country. With the ongoing heavy rains, the organization continues to coordinate evacuation, medical, and relief operations for flood-vulnerable communities.
