The Government has applauded the Kenya Mortgage Refinance Company (KMRC) for its vital role in transforming the country’s affordable housing sector. This was at the 4th Kenya Affordable Housing Conference (KAHC), held at the Grand Royal Swiss Hotel in Kisumu.

Cabinet Secretary for Lands, Public Works, Housing, and Urban Development Alice Wahome noted the critical role played by KMRC in the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). She said the company is filling the affordability gap by enhancing the availability of housing finance.

KMRC, Wahome says, has disbursed over Ksh 21.4 billion in single-digit, fixed-rate loans with long tenures to primary lenders. This funding has unblocked over 4,500 affordable home loans in 39 counties. She said that such programs are vital in making it possible for Kenyans to get affordable and dignified housing.

The conference, which had the theme of “Revolutionizing Housing Finance: Innovation Meets Sustainability”, drew policymakers, investors, developers, and housing specialists from East Africa and other regions of the globe. Delegations from Tanzania, Uganda, India, Pakistan, and Malaysia also attended, providing a platform for the sharing of innovative concepts and sustainable housing solutions.

Addressing the event, KMRC CEO Johnstone Oltetia reaffirmed the company’s vision of market-driven affordability. He called for innovation and scalable models towards the achievement of sustainable housing development.

“Our vision at KMRC is to enable affordable housing in a way that is both transformational and sustainable. This conference has to be a springboard for positive change—where sustainability and innovation unite to build homes, strengthen families, and empower communities,” Oltetia stated.

He called upon the stakeholders to work together on addressing financing gaps, legal challenges, and demographic challenges. Oltetia also requested stronger public-private partnerships for developing scalable and sustainable housing solutions.

The ceremony served as a reminder that affordable housing is more than building houses—it’s about building opportunities, empowering communities, and improving the quality of life for all Kenyans. With the continued backing and strategic partnership of KMRC, the government is striving to make decent living a reality for many more families across the country.
