Detectives in Nakuru County have launched investigations into an incident in which a KCSE candidate was found dead in what is suspected to be a case of suicide in the Lanet area.

According to police reports, the deceased was a 17-year-old female student from Shunem Secondary School sitting for her final exams. On the night of Sunday, November 9, she was in class with other students revising for the Mathematics paper scheduled for the following morning.

The students who attended the study session said that at one point during the session, the student excused herself and went to the dormitory but never returned. Her absence continued for so long that the supervising teacher had to ask a few students to look for her.

It was moments later that the search ended in horror when students found her lifeless body dangling from a truss inside one of the classrooms. A piece of cloth was tied around her neck. Shocked by the discovery, the students screamed for help, which attracted teachers and other learners to the scene.

Police who attended the scene confirmed that a note believed to be a suicide note was recovered from the student’s locker. A message reportedly addressed to the parents is now being analyzed by the investigators to confirm its authenticity. The body was later moved to the mortuary awaiting post-mortem examination and further investigations.

The sad news was conveyed to her parents, who were heartbroken over the sudden loss of their daughter. Police officials stated that the incident is one among various similar cases reported in the country within recent times.

Despite continued efforts by the government and advocates in mental health, cases of suicide have been on the rise in Kenya. Most victims tend to be males, although recent reports indicate that cases among young people, including students, are rising.

The WHO attributes suicide to several factors that include academic pressure, unemployment, relationship challenges, mental health disorders such as depression and bipolar, substance abuse, and family history of suicide.

In another incident in Nyamira County, police are investigating the murder of a 23-year-old boda boda rider identified as Reagan Nyamongo. The body was found in a thicket in Matutu, Borabu, with injuries to the head and right ear, after he had gone missing for five days. Police suspect the assailants targeted his recently purchased motorcycle and killed him when he resisted the robbery. His body was taken to the mortuary as investigations continue. Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with the attackers to avoid loss of life.
