There was pandemonium at Eldoret National Polytechnic after Ronald Oduwane was brutally killed and attacked near Cherunya. Dozens of protesters marched outside the campus shouting, “Comrades Power! Justice for Ronald!” demanding clarification from authorities.
Daniel Oko, a student activist, addressed the crowd. “I came to learn. I came to change my home. But instead, we are living in fear,” he said. “Every year, we lose students. We report to the police, and nothing happens. Yesterday, Ronald was killed. Today, we demand justice.”
Ronald was attacked in broad daylight. Witnesses stated that he was beaten to death, dying instantly due to extensive bleeding. Students had phoned the police for help. They waited for hours. When the police finally arrived late at night, they were allegedly intoxicated and haughty. “We will leave the body with you,” one of the policemen supposedly said to students, infuriating them.
Jevin Kassam, the Dean of Comrades, declared, “This is not the first death. There have been previous deaths of students in Cherunya, Langas, and Kisumu Ndogo. We desire justice. We are only giving the DCI one day to wrap up investigations and arrest those involved in Ronald’s assassination.”
Juliet Mokeira, Environment and Health Cabinet Secretary, condemned the insecurity. “We require streetlights in Teleview, Kisumu Ndogo, Yellow Line, and Cherunya. Our security cannot be taken for granted. The OCS who abused students must apologize to this community. Any one of us tomorrow could be at their fate,” she said.
Eldoret Police Commander Benjamin Mwathi confirmed the incident to the media. “The student was attacked at about 8 PM on his way back home. The attackers who are yet to be identified used blunt weapons to strike him. He died instantly. The body was escorted to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary,” Mwathi recorded.
Team Luisi’s Brian Young joined in, “There is insecurity everywhere. Police are hunting chang’aa dens instead of protecting students. Ronald was one of us. We cannot let his death go unpunished.”
As the crowd’s chants reached a deafening chorus, Jevin pitched in a final warning: “DCI has 24 hours. If there is no arrest and progress tomorrow, comrades will act. Comrades Power!”
By nightfall, detectives were under growing pressure. The students vowed they would not rest until justice for Ronald was done.
