Jumuiya Women Fund an ambitious women’s rights organization which leverages its philanthropic and capacity building strategies to delivery impactful outcomes for women and girls, has launched THE FOOD, LIVELIHOODS AND NUTRITION PROJECT (FLN) targeting 300 women led households.
The program is responding to a humanitarian emergency across six counties of Kericho, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo, Homa Bay, and Busia, to directly support 300 most vulnerable households through monthly cash transfers over a 6 months period.
The Food, Livelihoods and Nutrition (FLN) project, will train 100 pilot households on climate-smart agricultural techniques and practices, and supply these 100 pilot farmers with hybrid vegetables and maize seeds to improve local food security and sustainable livelihoods, whilst mitigating and adapting to climate change – the main cause of the prolonged drought.
“Due to their vulnerability young girls for example have been sexually exploited in some of the counties, this cash transfer program will not only support their livelihoods but ensure women and girls live a dignified life”Said Winny Kiptoo Chair Board of Directors at Jumuiya Women Fund.
In September 2021, Government of Kenya declared a National emergency regarding one of the most severe and longest drought situations in the country, which began in 2020, with widespread livelihood losses and massive displacement of populations.
Reports indicate that more than 4.2 million people representing 24% of the population living in arid and semi-arid lands in Kenya are facing high levels of acute food insecurity, with 2.7 million people already in the crisis phase and 785,000 people in the emergency state.
Distinguished dignitaries, including the representatives from the UN Women, Deputy Governor of Nandi County, Rotary International, and several local and international civil society organizations attended the launch.
The cash transfer, which is the flagship component of the project, will see 300 recipients receive ksh6,000 with technological support of Safaricom Ltd for mobile money transfers.
