Jua Kali Queens Crowned Governor’s Cup Champions, Take Home Sh1 Million Award

A football team based in Machakos Town named Jua Kali Queens won the Governor’s Cup in the ladies’ category following an entertaining final match at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos. The win symbolized a big victory for the team and marked an increasing trend towards prominence in ladies’ football in the county.
Following their victory, the Jua Kali Queens were awarded a cash prize of Sh1 million during a colourful award ceremony which attracted a good number of football fans, including local leaders and major stakeholders in the sports industry. The money was presented to the team by Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti and Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
While addressing guests during the presentation ceremony, Governor Ndeti thanked the players for exhibiting discipline, unity, and resilience both on and off the grounds. Governor Ndeti stated that Governor’s Cup is one of her flagship programs in her government, which aims to empower youth and women by offering them opportunities to showcase their talents.
“Sports have an important role in providing opportunities for people, in identifying talent, and in engaging our youth in constructive activities. Today, we are celebrating our women because they have shown that with proper support, they can attain immense success,” Governor Ndeti stated.
Kalonzo Musyoka also Congratulated Jua Kali Queens on their win, pointing out that their victory shows how important it is to invest in grassroots sports. He added that local tournaments such as the Governor’s Cup are vital in helping to identify and nurture talent early on.
“The successes that we are witnessing today exemplify what can be achieved when talent is given all the support it deserves. The support for women sports must become a priority if we hope to realize the potential of these events,” Kalonzo explained.
The Governor’s Cup tournament saw women football teams from different parts of Machakos County participating, thus making it a major hub for developing talent. Through these years, this tournament has played a critical role in developing interest in football among women and the youth, in addition to building cohesion in society through sports.
The players and officials of Jua Kali Queens appreciated the support accorded to them by the county government and organizers of the competition. They felt that with this money, they will be able to improve their training activities and purchase better equipment in order to face future challenges in higher-level competitions.
