The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has slated November 27, 2025, as the date for all pending by-elections. This comes after some electoral regions were without elected leaders for more than two years.
In a Gazette notice released on Friday, August 8, IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon announced that 16 by-elections for ward seats will be conducted across various counties.
The wards include Angata Nanyokie in Samburu, Chemundu/Kapng’etuny in Nandi, Chewani in Tana River, Fafi in Garissa, Kariobangi North in Nairobi, Kisa East in Kakamega, and Metkei in Elgeyo Marakwet.
The others are Mumbuni North in Machakos, Narok Town in Narok, Purko in Kajiado, Tembelio in Uasin Gishu, Nyansiongo, Nyamaiya, and Ekerenyo in Nyamira, and Lake Zone and Nanaam in Turkana.
Ethekon also said that additional by-elections would be revealed on Monday, August 11. They include the Baringo Senate, MP positions for Banissa, Kasipul, Magarini, Malava, Mbeere North, and Ugunja, and the MCA position for Kabuchai.
Political parties wishing to nominate candidates should provide names by Wednesday, September 17. Public officers wishing to run should resign within seven days from notice.
The Commission will publish the list of candidates vying for party primaries and the dates for the primaries within seven days of receiving their submissions.
Independent candidates should not have been a member of any political party for at least three months before election day. They are also required to submit their names by Wednesday, September 17.
Campaigns will become official on Wednesday, October 8, and last until Monday, November 24. Campaigning will be allowed from 7:00 a.m. and until 6:00 p.m. daily.
Political parties and individual candidates must nominate and give their election agents to the IEBC on Tuesday, November 11.
The Commission will use the certified register of voters released on June 21, 2022, for all the by-elections.
This announcement thus sets the stage for a strenuous political season with parties and politicians preparing to fight for the vacant seats.
