Ida Odinga has explained that Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Oburu Oginga missed the first anniversary commemoration of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga because he was unwell and had been advised by his doctors to limit public engagements.

Speaking at Migwena Cultural Grounds in Bondo, Siaya County, on Thursday, October 15, 2026, Ida apologised to mourners on behalf of the Siaya senator and sought to ease concerns about his health.

She said Oburu’s condition was not severe, dismissing fears that had emerged after his recent absence from several public events.

“There is something I want to say and I consider this very important. Please allow me to convey apologies from Dr. Oburu Odinga. He is not feeling well but he is not very sick. He is alive,” Ida told the gathering.

The widow of the late former Prime Minister said Oburu’s doctors had advised him to reduce strenuous activities and avoid gatherings with large crowds as he recovered.

“The doctors who are looking after him have said that he should go slow and not come to a rowdy rally like this,” she added.

Her remarks came after sections of the crowd chanted Oburu’s name during the memorial, demanding to know why the ODM leader was absent from the ceremony.

Videos circulating from the event showed mourners calling for an explanation, reflecting growing public interest in his health following several missed engagements.

Oburu’s absence had drawn particular attention because the anniversary of Raila’s death falls on his birthday, adding to calls for an update on his condition.

The senator has also missed other public engagements in recent weeks, including the October 7 handover ceremony for Raila’s mausoleum. His absence from the events has fuelled speculation about his health, prompting calls from political allies and members of the public for clarification.

On Tuesday, October 13, ODM communications director Phillip Etale cautioned against spreading unverified information about the party leader’s condition.

The party had previously disclosed that Oburu had received medical treatment in Kenya and London and was taking time to recover under medical advice.

His secretariat also dismissed social media reports claiming that he had died, insisting that he was alive, safe and in good spirits.

Ida’s statement at the Bondo memorial provided a direct explanation for his absence, while indicating that his doctors wanted him to avoid demanding public engagements during his recovery.

Oburu, who succeeded his younger brother Raila as ODM party leader, remains a key figure in the party as it navigates its political direction following the former Prime Minister’s death.

The anniversary commemoration brought together thousands of mourners who gathered to honour Raila’s legacy and reflect on his contribution to Kenya’s political development.

Raila, a former Prime Minister and longtime opposition leader, died in October 2025. His death marked the end of decades of political activity that shaped Kenya’s multiparty democracy and national political debate.
