The North Rift region is set to experience a sea change in health care delivery after the historic groundbreaking of the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital Multi-Speciality Hospital in Kiplombe, Soy Constituency. A ceremony led by the Cabinet Secretary for Health, Hon. Aden Duale, Monday, heralded the commencement of one of the biggest and most sophisticated medical facilities on the African continent.
The new hospital is envisioned to be a centre of excellence both in clinical services and in research, thus raising the medical capacity in the region. According to the plan unveiled yesterday, Phase One of the project will have a capacity of 2,000 beds, 60 ICU beds, and 120 HDU beds. It is expected to be completed within 18 months, reflecting the government’s commitment to accelerating the implementation of key health infrastructure.
Health CS Aden Duale termed the project a game-changer, pointing out that the facility will not only enhance access to specialized healthcare but also ease the burden on patients who are often compelled to travel long distances for advanced treatment. Duale added that it would also strengthen medical training and research, given its close association with existing national referral and teaching institutions.
Leaders from the region attending the groundbreaking sounded similar notes, terming the project as a turning point into world-class health care. They indicated that setting up the multi-specialty hospital is in line with national efforts to upgrade health services aimed at achieving universal healthcare.
The local leadership also hailed President William Ruto for his dedication to transforming Kenya’s health sector through massive investments into modern medical infrastructure. They added that the vision by the President has paved the way for facilities that can handle complex medical procedures, attract top medical professionals, and position Kenya as a regional hub for advanced healthcare.
The county leaders assured continued support for the initiatives of the national government, promising to complement the efforts by upgrading health facilities at the county level to guarantee smooth referrals and efficient service delivery. This, they said, would ensure that current and future investments in well-equipped hospitals and community health programs complement the new MTRH project, with a view of widening access to quality care for all residents. With its construction well underway, there is high anticipation that this MTRH Multi-Speciality Hospital will reshape health care in the North Rift and contribute greatly to Kenya’s broader goal of establishing a robust, modern, and equitable health system.
