The Council of Governors (CoG) strongly condemned what it called an unacceptable attack on Samburu Governor Lelelit Lati because certain senators had used violence and intimidation during their Senate County Public Accounts Committee (CPAC) hearings amid rising tensions.
CoG Chairperson Ahmed Abdullahi issued a statement on April 2, 2026, which detailed his serious concern about the reported incident because it disrespected the dignified nature of the governor position. He explained that these actions threaten constitutional principles while they create dangers for rule of law.
The statement accused the senators of engaging in behavior which was both unsuitable and destructive to the standards required of public office holders. Abdullahi stated that the governor position should receive continuous honour because it serves as a central component of devolved governance. Any violent action against this office holder decreases the constitutional governance system according to him.
The statement emphasized that such actions decrease the respect which should be given to the Governor position because it serves as the Head of Government while simultaneously creating a direct threat to constitutionalism and the rule of law.
The CoG confirmed that Senate functions as an “August House” to which the Constitution delegates responsibility for protecting county government interests. The Senate has to implement its oversight duties through legal methods which the Constitution authorizes while following Senate Standing Orders. The governors maintained that existing legal protocols require county officials to face liability which needs to be followed instead of what they called intimidation and harassment and other aggressive actions.
The governors demanded that the Senate Speaker should denounce all individuals who took part in the situation while his office should carry out immediate measures to address the issues which county leaders raised about specific County Public Accounts Committee members. The Senate leadership should protect its processes through fair and transparent methods which treat all parties with dignity according to the governors’ request.
The CoG established that the supposed assault includes elements of a criminal offense which they intend to pursue through legal methods to achieve justice. The officials reiterated their commitment to uphold legal standards while ensuring every person faces equal responsibility for their actions.
The statement requested all parties to maintain peaceful behavior while state officials should protect their obligations to accountability and human rights together with the rule of law. The governors demanded immediate actions to safeguard constitutional order while building public trust in government institutions throughout the nation.
