Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, has declined to resign amid calls over what he described as an uncalled-for and politically motivated impeachment process against him.

Recently, during a press briefing, Gachagua sounded confident of his acquittal and declared his determination to keep the position of Kenya’s Deputy President.

“I’m confident I shall get justice and this impeachment overturned,” he insisted.

He also ridiculed anyone who dared try to persuade him to resign.

“Whoever suggests that I resign is only wasting their breath. A few people have recruited my friends in trying to reach me to try to persuade me, but those messages are preposterous. Don’t even bother passing them to me—I am not resigning,” said Gachagua.

The DP was critical of the public engagement process associated with these allegations, terming it a “poorly executed affair” that did not serve to advance his view.

He stated that the charges made public were framed in obscure legal terms, which an average Kenyan would not understand, and therefore would demean the process.

“My response was missing from what was distributed to the Kenyan public,” he explained. “Kenyans were asked to give their opinions whether the DP should be impeached, but the allegations were presented in extremely confusing legal language which few could understand.”

Gachagua was candid that his constituents should be made aware of the charges with transparency, so they understand the nature of the accusations and his responses.

He termed the allegations “absurd” and “propaganda,” claiming they were politically charged but had no element of misconduct.

“It’s important those who put me in office understand the baseless nature of these charges. This is just propaganda—a political ploy to divest me of my office. It has nothing to do with infringing on the Constitution, misbehaving, or illegality,” he said firmly.

Gachagua’s firm stand comes in the face of a rapidly heated political environment, as talks increasingly revolve around the legality of the impeachment process.

As events in the impeachment unfold, focus shifts to the National Assembly, where Gachagua is expected to make a presentation of his case.
