The family of the late Albert Ojwang’ is in distress after revealing that fraudsters have stolen a significant amount of the money donated by well-wishers to support his burial arrangements.
Speaking to the media, a family representative said that they had shared a paybill number online to collect donations after the tragic death of Ojwang’, but unknown individuals took advantage of the situation to circulate fake numbers, diverting funds.
“We are deeply hurt and shocked. While we are mourning our brother, there are people out there benefiting from our pain. They created fake paybills and many people sent money to the wrong accounts,” said the deceased’s cousin.
Albert Ojwang’, whose death sparked nationwide outrage, was reportedly a victim of police brutality, prompting a public outpouring of sympathy and financial support. The family had hoped to give him a dignified send-off but now says the theft of funds has left them stranded.
“We are appealing to authorities to investigate this matter urgently and help us trace the individuals behind this fraud. We also urge well-wishers to confirm with the family before sending any contributions,” added the family spokesperson.
The family has since issued an official paybill number and asked Kenyans to be vigilant. They say the burial plans are ongoing despite the financial setback and are hopeful justice will prevail, both for Ojwang’s death and the theft of the contributions.
