“I came to learn about the theft of my money when I went to check the balance at the KCB Eldoret branch. I could not imagine that my trusted driver could do that to me,” Boit told the court.

Professor Mike Kipsugut Boit appears before the Eldoret Chief Magistrate’s Court.

Renowned former middle-distance athlete and retired Kenyatta University don, Professor Mike Kipsugut Boit, has narrated in court how his trusted driver allegedly defrauded him of more than Sh1.4 million from his bank accounts.

Testifying before Eldoret Chief Magistrate Dennis Mikoyan, the 76-year-old retired professor of Exercise and Sports Science recounted how his long-time call driver, Kevine Kipruto Lagat, secretly obtained his M-Pesa PIN and later siphoned money from his accounts in Eldoret and Nandi Hills.

“I came to learn about the theft of my money when I went to check the balance at the KCB Eldoret branch. I could not imagine that my trusted driver could do that to me,” Boit told the court.

According to his testimony, Prof. Boit said he had developed a high level of trust with his driver and often conducted mobile money transactions in his presence without suspecting foul play.

The court heard that the alleged fraud occurred between December 23, 2023, and January 27, 2025, during which the accused reportedly accessed multiple accounts and transferred large sums without authorization.

“I used to pay my call driver Sh3,000 per day for driving me to and from Nairobi. I think he took advantage of my advanced age and memory lapses to defraud me,” the retired professor added.

Boit said he discovered the fraud after noticing irregularities in his KCB account and immediately reported the matter at Naiberi Police Station in Ainabkoi Sub-county, where he recorded a statement.

In a surprising revelation, the court was told that Lagat allegedly used a mobile phone line belonging to a person who died 15 years ago to execute the fraudulent transfers.

According to court documents, Lagat—represented by Lawyer Tecla Tum—is accused of unlawfully accessing Prof. Boit’s KCB account and transferring Sh550,304, as well as Sh480,000 from his Nandi Hills account, among other amounts.

The case has been adjourned to January 26, 2026, for further hearing.
