After floods combined with silt accumulation to create unsafe conditions, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) issued a driving warning to all drivers who use the Mai Mahiu–Suswa–Narok (B7) highway.
The agency announced on March 19, 2026, that the Kedong Ranch area near Suswa experienced the most severe flooding because of heavy rains which completely stopped all vehicle movement.
KeNHA reported that response teams have arrived at the location to begin their mission of removing debris while they restore road access.
Drivers should avoid flooded areas because attempting to cross these sections presents extreme danger which could result in vehicles being carried away by water or becoming trapped in mud. All drivers must follow the directions, which police officers and traffic control personnel will provide throughout the entire area.
The authority confirmed that ongoing rainy conditions create hazardous situations which affect the road section between the Naivasha Inland Container Depot and Suswa Ranch.
Travelers who have not yet departed should wait until better conditions become available. Motorists who need to drive should use the alternate routes which include Ngong-Suswa and Nairobi-Naivasha-Nakuru-Mau Narok-Narok and Nairobi-Naivasha-Longonot-Suswa.
The efforts to restore normal traffic conditions and improve road safety in affected areas remain ongoing according to KeNHA officials.
The advisory follows a warning from the Kenya Meteorological Department about widespread heavy rainfall expected across the country over the weekend.
Areas likely to receive rainfall include Turkana, Samburu, Migori, Nyamira, Bungoma, Busia, Kakamega, Vihiga, West Pokot, Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, Trans Nzoia, Nandi, Uasin Gishu, Nakuru, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Kisii, Kericho, Bomet, Kiambu, Embu, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Laikipia, Tharaka-Nithi and Meru.
Rainfall will impact additional areas which include Nairobi, Narok, Kajiado, Makueni, Machakos, Taita Taveta, Kitui, Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi and Garissa, as well as parts of Marsabit, Isiolo, Wajir, Mandera and Tana River.
Residents in these areas must stay vigilant because heavy rains will likely cause both flooding and flash floods which reduce visibility.
