Two former policemen reportedly belonging to the illegal Fighting Brutality and Impunity (FBI) group were presented in the Kahawa Law Courts as anti-terror police continue conducting inquiries into the group’s implication in reported terrorist activities.
Jackson Kuria Kihara, known by the alias “Cop Shakur” and a one-time correctional officer, was picked up in Kahawa West. At the time of his arrest, he was reportedly carrying a red beret with the group’s insignia. On Thursday, he was charged to respond to terrorism charges.
This follows the recent detention of Patrick Nyambaka Osoi, a ex-Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldier and founding member of the outlawed group. Osoi was detained in a raid along Lang’ata Road and had previously appeared in the same court a day earlier.
The ex-soldier is facing charges of contravening the Prevention of Terrorism Act, 2012, including illegal possession of a gun. The police detain him at Muthaiga Police Station awaiting the determination of an application for his further detention, with a verdict waiting to be delivered.
The two ex-officers have been claimed to have played key roles in establishing the FBI unit, which has also been under close observation for suspected links with outlawed groups. The detectives are continuing to investigate further to map the structure of the organization, track its activities, and determine whether it still has active connections with local or international terror cells.
Security agencies have heightened surveillance and investigative operations to dismantle the organization and neutralize any possible threat emanating from it. The arrests represent intensified suppression of individuals or groups attempting to undermine national security through radicalized activity or unauthorized militia.
Meanwhile, the hearings at the court will continue with the prosecution seeking prolonged detention to allow investigators to finalize their investigation and provide additional intelligence on the extent of the activities of the group.
