Farmers from Elgeyo marakwet and Uasin gishu county have complained about changes to the tree planting contract they signed with a private company.
They have been asked to give out title deed photocopy for investigation by the new people ,now they are demanding a previous agreement which had 3 pages not the second one with five to six pages also in that agreement they were allowed to visit green earth offices anyday they wish to visit .
“We don’t want new people, the only people we know are three Yego,Victor and mercy,we don’t want people from other tribes whom we will not understand each other.” Said one of the farmers.
According to the Green Plant Initiative Company it started in the year 2023 and they did not specify how many acres for the tree planting, farmers signed a contract with green plant initiative 2050, earth bank and mkulima. This year 2025 they introduce new people they don,t know any concept about.
“After one week they introduce another contract of 4, Green plant initiative,GPI, earth bank and mkulima, they increase years of planting trees from 30 to 45 years, also they deny us from managing our farms,i write a email that i wanted to withdraw the contract but there is no response upto now.”said kipruto maiyo from keiyo sub county.
The affected communities are calling for the return to the original terms and for open dialogue with representatives they trust, hoping for a resolution that respects the rights of land owners.
