Elgeyo Marakwet Governor has expressed deep sadness following the tragic loss of two lives in Kipkenda, Emsoo Ward, after heavy rains hit parts of the county on Sunday evening. The governor conveyed his condolences to the grieving families and assured them of the county government’s support during this difficult time.

The governor said in a statement on Monday: “It is with great sorrow that I share the news of the loss of two precious lives in Kipkenda, Emsoo Ward. On behalf of my family and the County Government of Elgeyo Marakwet, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the affected families and the entire community.”

He went on to urge residents, particularly those living along the escarpments and flood-prone areas, to exercise extreme caution as the rains continue to pound the region. The governor told the residents that they should move to safer grounds where necessary to avoid further loss of life or property.

“With the rains persisting, I call upon every individual residing in high-risk areas to take precautionary measures. Your safety and that of your families come first. Let us act early and responsibly,” he added.

Local reports from authorities said the heavy rains caused landslides and flooding, affecting numerous homesteads in Kipkenda and surrounding areas. County disaster teams have since been dispatched to survey the situation and assist affected and possibly displaced families.

The governor reassured the public that his administration is working in close collaboration with the National Disaster Management Unit and other partners to closely monitor weather patterns and respond quickly in case of any emergencies. He further called on community leaders and chiefs to help sensitize residents on early evacuation and preparedness, noting that the current rainy season poses a great risk to communities living along steep slopes and riverbanks.

He further appealed for calm and solidarity among the people of the county, saying this was a time for unity, compassion, and collective responsibility. “Let us stand together in prayer and unity as we navigate this challenging season. We must look out for one another and ensure no more lives are lost to preventable disasters,” the governor said.

Elgeyo Marakwet, known for its rugged terrain and steep escarpments, has been prone to landslides and flash floods in the event of heavy rainfalls. Such disasters, according to experts, have been worsened by climate change and environmental degradation, which calls for increased awareness and community preparedness. The county government urged residents to stay vigilant, follow the weather advisory, and call in any signs of danger to the nearest authorities as efforts to mitigate further disasters continue.
