Eldoret Prison is set to host the second edition of the Regional Commander’s Wellness Football League finals on Friday, May 30, 2025. The highly anticipated match will feature Eldoret Prison facing off against Kericho Prison, culminating a series of competitions aimed at promoting staff wellness and rehabilitation within the Kenya Prisons Service.
The Regional Commander’s Wellness League is an initiative under the Directorate of Welfare, Sports, and Rehabilitation, which encompasses various sections including social welfare, sports, formal education, counseling services, and chaplaincy services. The league is part of broader efforts to enhance physical health, mental well-being, discipline, and unity among correctional facilities.
Commissioner General of Prisons, Patrick Aranduh, has emphasized the importance of such initiatives, noting that “financial management and stress management is key for us. One of the challenges that we have in the country is mental wellness.” He further stated, “When you get trained on stress management, you realize that all issues including financial problems can be managed through proper stress management and good mental health.”
The Kenya Prisons Service has been actively promoting mental health awareness and wellness among its staff. The State Department for Correctional Services has escalated awareness of mental health wellness in its institutions, with several internal counseling units providing psychological guidance to both offenders and staff. Additionally, the department has planned a Correctional Service Week with the theme “Mental Health Wellness for Effective Service Delivery” to further discuss mental health issues through different engagements.
Eldoret, known as the “City of Champions,” is a fitting location for the finals, given its rich sporting heritage and status as a training ground for numerous Kenyan distance runners. The city’s high altitude and facilities like the Kipchoge Keino Stadium make it an ideal venue for athletic events.
The finals promise to be a memorable and inspiring event for both participants and guests, highlighting the Kenya Prisons Service’s commitment to staff welfare, rehabilitation, and community engagement through sports.
