Violence erupted in Eldoret town, Uasin Gishu county, as over 35 youths were arrested during a protest that turned chaotic.
The youths, who had been demonstrating in the Huruma area, attempted to loot properties and business premises in and outside the Eldoret Central business district around midnight.
According to Uasin Gishu County Commander Benjamin Mwathi, the police successfully secured the central business district, but not before the youths had barricaded roads in Huruma, prompting the police to deploy tear gas cannisters to disperse them.
The police response was swift, with vehicles patrolling the town every few minutes, maintaining a visible presence. However, the business community in Eldoret town took precautions, closing their businesses in fear of being targeted by the protestors.
The situation was tense, with people huddled in corridors, waiting to see how events would unfold. Despite the relative calm that had been restored, the incident served as a reminder of the potential for protests to turn violent.
Commander Mwathi assured the public that the police were working to maintain order and restore peace in the area. The arrests of the 35 youths were a significant step in this effort, but the underlying causes of the protests remained to be addressed.
