Dr. Philip Kiptanui Kirwa Appointed New CEO of Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital: A Visionary Leader Ready to Elevate Healthcare Standards

The Board of Management of Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) officially declared the appointment of Dr. Philip Kiptanui Kirwa as the institution’s new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective from the 17th of May 2024. This appointment follows a rigorous selection process, endorsed by Mr. Felix Koskei, EGH, the Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service.
Dr. Kirwa brings to his new role a wealth of experience and a distinguished professional history. With a tenure spanning 28 years, he has held diverse roles showcasing remarkable proficiency in clinical practice and organizational leadership. Notable among his previous positions are Medical Director of Private Wings, Director of Reproductive Health, and most recently, Senior Director of Clinical Services at MTRH. Prior to assuming the CEO position, Dr. Kirwa served as the Acting CEO. He succeeds Dr. Wilson K. Aruasa, whose term concluded in January 2024.
Educationally, Dr. Kirwa holds a medical degree from the University of Nairobi, complemented by a Master’s degree in Obstetrics & Gynaecology from the same institution. He is duly registered with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council and holds memberships in esteemed professional bodies such as the Kenya Medical Association and the Kenya Obstetrics and Gynaecological Society. Furthermore, he is a fellow of the College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of East, Central, and South Africa. These credentials affirm his readiness to steer a complex healthcare institution such as MTRH.
Throughout his career journey, Dr. Kirwa has consistently showcased a dedication to enhancing patient care, implementing innovative healthcare solutions, and fostering a collaborative work culture. His leadership ethos revolves around patient-centric care, operational efficiency, and the continuous professional growth of medical personnel.
Expressing gratitude for the appointment, Dr. Kirwa underscored his commitment to enhancing service delivery at MTRH, particularly in specialized care. Highlighting forthcoming initiatives, he mentioned the establishment of a cardiac catheterization laboratory within the hospital’s private wing. He emphasized the readiness of the hospital staff to cater to the influx of patients from across East Africa, citing the institution’s remarkable performance during the recent national doctors’ strike, where MTRH operated at 75 percent higher capacity than other hospitals in the country.
