The Ministry of Health has verified the appointment of Dr. Richard Lesiyampe Leserian as the new acting Chief Executive Officer of Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH). Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale made the appointment on Monday evening.

Duale referred to Dr. Lesiyampe as a highly experienced health administrator. He further stated that Dr. Lesiyampe possesses the requisite expertise to steer KNH through the ongoing reforms. “Dr. Richard Lesiyampe brings years of experience in strengthening governance, clinical operations, and management systems,” noted Duale.

KNH, the country’s largest referral hospital, is at the epicenter of health care. It is also the premier training and research facility for the majority of health professionals. Duale explained that the transition of leadership has come at a time when the government is pushing through with major reforms in the sector. The reforms are intended to steer the path towards Universal Health Coverage.

Before this appointment, Dr. Lesiyampe was serving as the acting CEO of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH). In the new arrangements, Joshua Clinton Ombiri will now serve as the acting CEO at JOOTRH.

Dr. Lesiyampe has occupied various top roles in Kenya’s health industry. His leadership has been credited with streamlining efficiency in key hospitals and service delivery in a more organized manner. He is also renowned for building strong partnerships among health institutions and government agencies.

The appointment has been received in the medical fraternity with hope. His experience, according to some doctors, will help KNH manage its woes that include congestion, delayed services, and high demand for specialized treatment.

KNH is undergoing reforms to improve patient flow, waiting times, and access to specialized care. The hospital is also a major training facility for doctors, nurses, and specialists from across the region.

The Ministry has reassured Kenyans that the leadership changes will not disrupt services. To the contrary, the move is expected to speed up reforms and ensure seamless operations at KNH and JOOTRH.

Dr. Lesiyampe, through his new appointment, is now expected to guide KNH into a new chapter of greater service delivery and accountability in the health sector.
