Deputy President Kithure Kindiki on Monday commissioned Geturi School in Mosocho, Kitutu Chache North Constituency, Kisii County, where he outlined the government’s ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening Kenya’s education sector.

Speaking during the event, Prof. Kindiki said the Kenya Kwanza administration had substantially increased investment in education to improve access, quality and relevance of learning across the country.

According to the Deputy President, the education budget has grown from Sh500 billion in 2022 to Sh702 billion in the current financial year and is expected to rise further to a record Sh765 billion in the 2026/2027 financial year beginning July 1.

“We are investing heavily in education because it remains the strongest foundation for equality, opportunity and national transformation,” Kindiki said.

He noted that the government has implemented several reforms under the Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) framework, alongside expanding infrastructure and recruiting teachers to improve learning conditions nationwide.

Prof. Kindiki revealed that the government has recruited 100,000 teachers over the last four years, built 23,000 classrooms and constructed 1,600 laboratories to support quality education in schools.

On technical and vocational education, the Deputy President said reforms introduced by the government have significantly boosted enrolment and expanded opportunities for young people seeking practical skills training.

He said the government is constructing and equipping at least one technical training institution in every constituency while implementing reforms such as modular-based learning, dual training systems and recognition of prior learning.

According to Kindiki, the reduction of annual tuition fees in technical institutions from Sh105,000 to Sh87,000 has contributed to a sharp rise in enrolment from 297,000 students in 2022 to 718,000 currently.

The Deputy President also defended the new student-centred university funding model, saying it was intended to ensure students are not locked out of higher education due to financial difficulties while helping stabilise public universities.

“No student should miss university education because of lack of school fees,” he stated.

Kindiki further pledged continued government support towards education infrastructure, teacher employment and student assistance programmes to guarantee access to quality and relevant education for all learners.

The newly commissioned school was constructed through the National Government Constituencies Development Fund under the patronage of Kitutu Chache North MP Japhet Nyakundi.

Other leaders present included Kisii Deputy Governor Elijah Obebo, Members of Parliament, MCAs, teachers, parents and students.
