In their investigations into former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo’s death, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has acquitted itself from the oft-heard charges of foul play. To the DCI, all the officers assigned to the case carried out with fidelity an elaborate inquiry that was meant to illuminate Jirongo’s death. They saw fit to interview persons closely associated with him, as well as those who had been with him for a few hours before the fateful end.
Jirongo, 64, died in a traffic accident that occurred shortly after midnight on December 13, 2025. According to investigations, while apparently on his way to Lugari, he was involved in a head-on collision with a Climax Coach bus on the busy Nairobi–Nakuru Highway.
During the investigation, detectives recorded statements from critical witnesses, among them Jirongo’s widow, Ann Lanoi Pertet; bus driver Tiras Kamau Githinji; and bus conductor Manoah Ekokwa Alukoya Olasi. Additional questioning was carried out on employees of Eagol Petrol Station, where Jirongo’s vehicle had earlier been captured on CCTV making a U-Turn just before the accident.
The DCI also stated that Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula, as well as politicians Rebman Malala and Ibrahim Sambuli, rendered statements voluntarily. The three leaders were said to have been the last to have been with Jirongo at the Karen Oasis Restaurant on the evening of December 12, 2025, just hours before the deadly crash.
Also, seven passengers of the Climax Coach bus at the time of the accident came in to assist investigators. Their accounts were then formally recorded and entered into the case file.
An organized, multi-agency team of investigators was sent to the scene of the accident, during which officers documented the physical evidence and secured and preserved important exhibits; they further conducted a thorough investigation of the scene. The CCTV footage obtained from Eagol Petrol Station was also retrieved and went through technical review and analysis.
Investigators examined the bus manifest for information on passengers and studied unofficial video recordings of the accident scene made by the public. These were examined forensically to aid in reconstructing the events leading up to and during the collision.
After examining all the items collected, the DCI arrived at the conclusion that Jirongo had succumbed to some injuries in a road traffic accident, whereat there was no evidence of a criminal nature or foul play.
The investigative agency, however, indicates that the file will be taken to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for further advice and any required legal steerings once the remaining procedural steps are concluded.

Meanwhile, having noted with concern the need for calm among the public and political class after the unfortunate incident, the DCI urged those speculating about the incident to cease. The agency warned that every unchecked claim could be detrimental to the investigatory processes and might unnecessarily agitate and rouse public interest. It emphasized the definite necessity to allow official investigations to unfold based on factual evidence.
