For close to 30 years, the people of Gathiriga in Githioro Ward, Kipipiri Sub-county, Nyandarua County did not have a constant flow of clean water. They relied on ephemeral streams that dried up in the event of droughts.
That is no longer the case. Nyandarua Governor Dr. Moses Kiarie Badilisha has launched a solar-powered borehole and water reticulation system for the locals.
While launching the facility, Governor Badilisha emphasized how clean water improves life.
“Access to clean water is a human right and one of the ways we dignify our people,” he said.
The new water system will provide year-round access to safe drinking water. It will also boost agriculture through irrigation. Powered by solar energy, the borehole reduces running costs and ensures sustainability.
The project will not only enhance health but also build the local economy. When water is availed at home, families can pursue income-generating activities like poultry rearing, milk production, and irrigated kitchen gardening. The businesses will improve household incomes and food security.
The villagers will have conserved time and effort they were spending to carry water from a long distance. They can now devote this time to pursue small-scale enterprises and cottage industries such as soap production, food processing, and brickmaking. These activities are likely to provide employment and enhance rural economic growth.
Better hygiene and sanitation will reduce waterborne illnesses. Parents will spend less on healthcare and more on education, investment, and savings. The community shall be more financially stable.
