Mourning had engulfed the town of Chesongoch on Thursday night when the people assembled to pay their respects to 31 victims who died in massive mudslides that swept across the region. Hundreds of people gathered at what had once been a vibrant community space, now converted into a reflective place to remember victims and sympathize with the bereaved families.

From early evening onwards, groups of residents, comprising men, women, youths, and children, gradually filled the premises carrying candles, flowers, and photographs of the loved ones. Candlelight flickered on the somber faces of those who had turned up, symbolizing both sorrow and steadfast strength of a community determined to stand together in its darkest hour.

Soft hymns were sung throughout the night by mourners, Bible verses recited, and tributes of tearful praise. Many took turns speaking about the lives of parents, children, neighbors, and friends that are now gone, leaving such a gaping hole in their lives. The emotional weight of the tragedy was evident as some broke into tears while others extended comforting embraces.

Local religious leaders from different denominations were also in attendance, leading the gathering in prayer and messages of hope. They reminded residents in their speeches that even in moments of despair, unity remains a powerful force. They urged the community to continue showing support to the grieving families, most of whom are still reeling from the trauma caused by sudden loss.

Elected leaders and administrators joined the vigil as well, acknowledging the magnitude of the disaster and pledging continued assistance for survivors who are now displaced. They described the mudslides as one of the most heartbreaking events to hit the area in recent memory and called for long-term efforts to help affected households rebuild their lives.

Participants at the vigil spoke candidly about the emotional toll the tragedy has taken on Chesongoch. Some shared remembrances of the victims, which included stories of their kindness, dreams, and roles within the community. Others were thankful for such massive solidarity, adding that coming together comforted them in their pain. At the end of the night, all came together for one last prayer. They held candles high and prayed for the souls of the dead, healing for the grieving families, and strength for the community in the long journey to recovery. The vigil closed quietly, with many lingering to offer private prayers and reflect on the lives lost.
