The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially announced the postponement of the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN), originally scheduled for 2024, to August 2025.
The decision, revealed in a press release on January 14, 2025, aims to provide Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda with additional time to meet the required infrastructure and facility standards necessary for hosting the prestigious tournament.
Significant progress has been made in upgrading and constructing football facilities, including stadiums, training grounds, hotels, and hospitals across the three host nations.
However, CAF’s Technical and Infrastructure experts, who have been closely monitoring the preparations, advised that more time is essential to ensure these upgrades align with CAF’s stringent requirements for a successful CHAN.
CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe expressed his gratitude to the leadership of the host nations, commending Kenyan President William Ruto, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni for their commitment and efforts.
He stated, “I am impressed with the ongoing construction and renovations of the football infrastructure and facilities in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. I am confident that by August 2025, these will meet the requisite CAF standards for hosting a very successful TotalEnergies African Nations Championship.”
The postponement provides an opportunity for Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda to refine their infrastructure, which is crucial not only for CHAN but also for enhancing football development in the region.
CAF emphasized its support for the host nations in achieving their goals, ensuring the tournament’s rescheduling does not compromise its quality or success.
As part of the preparations, CAF announced that the draw for the CHAN 2024 (now CHAN 2025) will take place in Nairobi, Kenya, on January 15, 2025, at 8:00 PM Nairobi time. Further details on the tournament’s commencement date in August 2025 will be communicated in due course.
The rescheduling of CHAN underscores CAF’s commitment to maintaining high standards for its flagship tournaments while fostering regional growth and development.
Fans across the continent and beyond will now look forward to an even more exciting and well-organized championship in 2025.
