Farmers in Uasin Gishu and Bungoma counties have received a significant reprieve as Apollo Agriculture allocates Ksh. 5 million to assist in replanting maize after recent floods devastated their crops.

Benjamin Njogu Njenga, Co-founder and Managing Director of Apollo Agriculture, noted that the floods had severely impacted farmers in these regions. “Farmers faced challenges with the floods which adversely affected a section of them in Uasin Gishu and Bungoma counties, prompting us to launch this initiative,” he said.

The relief package includes insurance support, which will be crucial for the affected farmers. “We are setting aside Ksh. 5 million to support farmers whose crops were swept away by the floods. These funds will enable them to purchase fertilizers and other necessary inputs, facilitating their recovery,” Njenga explained.

On his part, Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii, who launched the program, emphasized the administration’s commitment to promoting agricultural diversification.

“Our administration places a special emphasis on promoting diversification programs by advocating for the adoption of high-value crops such as coffee, pyrethrum, and avocado. We are committed to empowering our hardworking farmers by providing them with access to certified seedlings, essential farm inputs, and reliable extension services,” Governor Bii stated.

Farmers have expressed their gratitude for Apollo Agriculture’s timely assistance. “We are very grateful for the gesture from Apollo Agriculture since we shall be able to replant again after our maize was carried away by floods,” one farmer remarked.

Apollo Agriculture has committed to providing beans and fertilizers to further support the replanting efforts. Hillary Kirwa, a maize farmer from Kesses who has been using Apollo Agriculture products for three years, emphasized the importance of such support, especially in times of need. “After the floods destroyed the maize plantations, Apollo Agriculture’s support has been invaluable,” Kirwa said, highlighting the essential role of plant insurance in protecting farmers.

Another farmer, Rose Mtacho, called for additional support from other stakeholders. “Apart from Apollo Agriculture, all other stakeholders, including Governor Chelilim, should chip in to cushion farmers from disasters. Farmers are the backbone of the economy of this country,” she stated.
