HIV infections are on the raise in Trans Nzoia County following an upsurge of defilement cases in recent past and  according to the Children’s Department at least three cases are reported daily.

Aston Maungu the County director says some of  affected sub counties include Kiminini, Saboti and Cherengany,

“The sub counties have seen a rise of late with the areas reporting more than three cases per day for the past six months and this is alarming, ”He said.

Interventions from state and non-state actors in Kwanza and Endebess areas have yielded fruits as fewer cases continue to be reported.

The County director has also cautioned single mothers who remarry with daughters saying statistics have indicated that stepfathers contribute largely to the defilement cases of their step daughters’

“Another cause of increase of defilement cases is from actors called step fathers. They go against the norm and have led to an increase in the numbers of defilement cases, my plea to mothers who remarry with daughters please talk to them (daughters) and tell them to speak out if molested, “Cautioned Maungu

The Children officer has also revealed that boys between 13-16 years have been engaging in sexual intercourse with their underage counterparts with many of them getting arrested and imprisoned under the sexual offences act.

“Our prisons are overflowing with young boys who have been arrested for defilement cases after engaging sexually with their fellow young girls, so parents let’s talk to our boys and inform them of the consequences of such acts, “Said the County director.

According to the Ministry of Health at least 9,484 children were defiled last year with many affected with sexually transmitted diseases including HIV.
