Chief Administrative Secretary Sports Art and Gender, Wesley Korir has disclosed the ministry is working in partnership with Athletics Kenya to implement stringent measures that will ensure no junior athletes will represent the country until they complete their secondary education.

The former Boston marathon winner said all stakeholders involved with matters of education will ensure that girls across the country will stay in school until they complete their basic  education  , however their talents will be nurtured  through the Talanta Hela initiative.

“Education is vital to our kids, especially our girls. The Ministry of Education is working closely with my department to ensure that all girls, especially the juniors, stay in school until they are of age to make the right decisions for themselves, “said Korir.

Korir stated that all juniors that must represent the country must belong to schools that are well-recognized by the ministry warning that all junior camps operating outside schools should be closed forthwith.

He further cited that all senior training camps in the country should not have juniors admitted to them.

“We will only recognize training camps in our schools. We will not acknowledge any other training camps that are outside the school premises. We must not only keep a track record of our children’s performance in class but also nurture their talents in sports and the creative industry collectively,” added Korir.

Initiatives to put up a center of excellence in training in high schools are also underway to ensure that the girls get an opportunity to connect them to the senior team.

The Talanta Hela initiative is intended to raise, nurture and motivate young girls by monetizing their talents in sports. The initiative also aims to identify schools that will act as academies to nurture certain sports.
