Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna are intensifying efforts to build a united opposition front against President William Ruto ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The latest discussions follow a meeting between Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) and leaders allied to Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi movement at Gachagua’s Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.

The meeting came hours after Gachagua returned to Kenya from the United States, where he had held consultations with Kenyans living abroad and worked on proposals for strengthening the opposition ahead of next year’s polls.

According to reports, the two camps agreed to pursue further engagements aimed at building cooperation and identifying a presidential candidate capable of challenging Ruto.

The discussions are part of wider opposition efforts to settle on a common candidate, with leaders facing pressure to overcome political differences and agree on an electoral strategy.

Gachagua and Sifuna have both supported the Wantam campaign, which seeks to prevent Ruto from securing a second term. Their growing political engagement has raised the possibility of a joint presidential ticket that brings together support bases from different parts of the country.

Gachagua has previously indicated that he would be willing to support Sifuna for the presidency or serve as his running mate if negotiations establish that the Nairobi senator has a stronger chance of defeating Ruto.

The former Deputy President has maintained that the opposition should select its flag bearer based on electoral strength rather than individual ambition.

The Wamunyoro meeting was attended by several political figures, including Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi and other leaders associated with the Linda Mwananchi movement.

Gachagua welcomed the delegation in a social media post, expressing optimism about cooperation between the two groups.

The talks are expected to continue in the coming weeks as opposition leaders explore possible alliances, joint campaign arrangements and strategies for mobilising voters.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka are also among the key figures whose positions could influence the formation of a broader opposition coalition.

However, the opposition has yet to resolve several important questions, including the identity of its presidential candidate, the terms of cooperation between participating parties and how political positions would be distributed within a possible alliance.

The negotiations are taking place as political parties begin positioning themselves for the August 2027 General Election.

For Gachagua, cooperation with Sifuna could help expand his political reach beyond the Mount Kenya region. For Sifuna, the emerging engagement offers an opportunity to strengthen ties with leaders who command support in other parts of the country.

Whether the discussions will produce a formal coalition and a joint presidential ticket remains to be seen. The outcome could shape the opposition’s ability to mount a coordinated challenge against Ruto in the next election.
