Members of the Uasin Gishu County Assembly have demanded answers over a reported shortfall of 2,794 lantern streetlights promised to the county ahead of the Mashujaa Day celebrations in Eldoret on October 20, 2026.

Langas Ward MCA Francis Muya and his Kaptagat counterpart, Jonathan Ngetich, raised concerns after Kenya Power officials reportedly told local leaders that only 206 lantern streetlights were available against an expected allocation of 3,000.

The MCAs are now demanding that the remaining units be delivered before the national celebrations or that the government explain their whereabouts.

“We had a meeting with Kenya Power over the issue of streetlights. We had been told that we would get 3,000 lantern streetlights, but it is sad that Kenya Power officials were only given 206,” Muya said.

According to Muya, leaders had initially requested 5,000 units but were later informed by Head of Public Service Felix Koskei that 3,000 would be provided.

The reported discrepancy has raised questions among local leaders about the status of the promised allocation and the offices responsible for its delivery.

MCAs Question Fairness in Allocation

Muya also questioned what he described as unequal treatment of Uasin Gishu compared with other regions that have hosted national events.

He urged the county’s elected leaders, including the senator, woman representative and Members of Parliament, to join efforts to establish what happened to the remaining streetlights.

“As the leadership of Uasin Gishu, we want to know where the streetlights are. Our senator, woman representative and MPs must come out and help us establish what happened. Enough is enough; we want the streetlights,” he said.

The MCA maintained that residents deserved accountability over commitments made to the county as it prepares to host the national celebrations.

Ngetich Sets October 20 Deadline

Ngetich echoed the concerns, saying leaders felt short-changed after being informed that only 206 lantern streetlights were available.

“We were told we would get 3,000 lantern streetlights. We had a meeting with Kenya Power officials, and they told us they only had 206 lanterns. We feel that we have been short-changed,” he said.

He called for the delivery of the remaining units before Mashujaa Day, warning that authorities should explain the shortfall if the deadline was not met.

“We want them delivered before October 20. If they are not delivered, we want to be told where the other lantern streetlights went. We want answers before the Mashujaa Day celebrations,” Ngetich added.

Eldoret Prepares to Host National Celebrations

The dispute comes as Eldoret prepares to host Mashujaa Day, a national event expected to attract government officials, national leaders and visitors from across the country.

The MCAs want the relevant government offices and Kenya Power to clarify whether the remaining 2,794 units are awaiting delivery or were handled through other arrangements.

At the time of publication, the government and Kenya Power had not publicly responded to the allegations raised by the two MCAs.

The reported shortfall remains unverified independently.
