Uasin Gishu County has added a packer garbage truck to its waste management fleet as part of efforts to improve solid waste collection and keep Eldoret cleaner.
Governor Jonathan Bii said the new truck would strengthen waste management operations by collecting and compacting solid waste at the point of collection.
The compaction system reduces the volume of waste, allowing the truck to carry larger quantities in a single trip. The county expects this to improve the efficiency of waste collection while reducing the number of trips required to transport garbage.
Bii said the truck’s enclosed system would also help minimise the spillage of waste during transportation.
The governor described the acquisition as a practical addition to the county’s waste management fleet as Uasin Gishu continues to invest in services aimed at improving the city’s environment.
“Its enclosed compaction system helps reduce the volume of waste, minimise spillage and keep our streets cleaner, while improving the efficiency of collection,” Bii said.
The new equipment comes as Eldoret continues to expand, increasing the demand for reliable waste collection and disposal services across residential, commercial and public areas.
The county government has been seeking to strengthen its waste management systems as part of efforts to maintain cleaner urban spaces.
Bii said the investment was part of the broader efforts to build a more sustainable City of Champions, the identity increasingly associated with Eldoret.
The packer truck is expected to support county waste collection teams by increasing the amount of solid waste that can be transported in each trip.
Improved waste collection could also help reduce the accumulation of garbage in public spaces and minimise environmental and public health risks associated with poorly managed solid waste.
The county’s latest investment adds to ongoing efforts to modernise municipal services as Eldoret continues to develop as a major urban centre in the North Rift.
