Chelsea legend John Terry has delivered a glowing verdict on Chelsea’s move for Emiliano Martinez, describing the Argentine as a world-class goalkeeper and the best signing of the entire summer window.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, the former Chelsea captain and England defender could not hide his excitement about Martinez’s impending arrival at Stamford Bridge.

“Emi Martinez coming in the building, I think is the signing of the summer,” Terry said. “What a world class goalkeeper he is. If I had any choice who I’d go and sign in the world, he would be right at the very top for me”.

Terry’s praise carries extra weight given his personal history with Martinez. The pair worked together at Aston Villa, where Terry served on the coaching staff during Martinez’s early months at Villa Park after his move from Arsenal in 2020.

During that time, Terry witnessed firsthand the mentality that has made Martinez one of the most decorated goalkeepers in world football. He has previously highlighted the 33-year-old’s confidence, intensity in training, influence on the dressing room, and his winning mindset — noting his obsession with clean sheets and hatred of conceding even in training drills.

For Terry, Martinez was the number one target above all others this window.

“If I had any choice who I would go and sign in the world, he would be right at the very top for me,” he reiterated in comments relayed via Metro.

Martinez is set to join Chelsea from Aston Villa after an agreement was reached with Enzo Maresca’s — now Xabi Alonso’s — side, and is expected to go straight in as the club’s new first-choice goalkeeper. The World Cup winner, who helped Argentina win in 2022 and reach the final again at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, arrives with huge pedigree and Premier League proven experience.

In a light-hearted moment, Terry also took to TikTok to joke that he has given Martinez his iconic No.26 shirt at Chelsea, a number made famous during his own legendary career at the Bridge.

The sentiment around the deal at Chelsea is one of huge excitement. Terry described the signing as “unbelievable” and believes Chelsea are getting a transformative presence between the posts.

For a Chelsea side that has struggled for consistency in the goalkeeping department in recent seasons, Martinez’s leadership, big-game temperament and shot-stopping ability are seen as a major upgrade. Terry’s endorsement — as a former defender who knows what it takes to win titles with a world-class keeper behind him — will only add to the anticipation among Chelsea supporters as the club prepares to officially unveil the Argentine as the signing of the summer.
