Chelsea Football Club has officially announced a major rebranding of its academy structure, confirming that from the start of the 2026-27 season, the club’s Under-21s and Under-19s squads will be known as Cobham Next Gen.
The Blues confirmed the change in a club statement released on Tuesday, saying the new identity better represents the current age profile of their leading academy sides and the club’s historic commitment to youth development.
In the statement, Chelsea said: “The new name more accurately reflects the age profile of our leading Academy side and Chelsea’s long-standing heritage of DEVELOPING the next generation of players for the senior game.”
The decision will see the traditional labels of U21s and U19s dropped for a unified brand under the Cobham Next Gen banner. Cobham, the name of Chelsea’s renowned training base in Surrey, has been synonymous with the club’s academy success for over two decades.
The rebrand is understood to be part of a wider strategy under the current ownership to streamline the pathway from academy to first team and to give the development squads a stronger, more marketable identity. While the age-group competitions such as Premier League 2 and the UEFA Youth League will still operate with age limits, Chelsea’s teams within those competitions will now be presented as Cobham Next Gen.
Chelsea’s academy is widely regarded as one of the most productive in world football. Based at the Cobham Training Centre since 2007, it has produced a host of senior stars including Reece James, Levi Colwill, Conor Gallagher, Mason Mount, and Trevoh Chalobah, while also winning multiple FA Youth Cups and UEFA Youth League titles.
Club officials believe the new name will reinforce the idea that the academy is not just an age-group team but the next generation of Chelsea first-team players. It also aligns with the club’s long-term vision of promoting youth and giving academy graduates a clearer sense of belonging to the senior project.
Sources within the club indicate that the Cobham Next Gen branding will also include new visual identity elements, including updated kits, training wear, and digital content across Chelsea’s platforms, though the iconic blue will remain central.
Fans have reacted with mixed feelings on social media, with some praising the modern and ambitious feel of the name, while others have questioned whether moving away from the traditional U21s and U19s labels complicates understanding of the age structure.
Nevertheless, Chelsea insist the change is more than cosmetic. The club says it is about philosophy, identity and pride in a system that has been at the heart of its success.
The Cobham Next Gen era will officially kick off in July 2026 ahead of pre-season, with both squads expected to compete in domestic and European youth competitions under the new name.
For Chelsea, the message is clear: the future has a new name, and it comes from Cobham.
