Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has praised the growing partnership between Kenya and Austria, saying the two countries are expanding cooperation in labor migration, education, trade, and innovation through agreements that are creating opportunities for Kenyan professionals.

Speaking on the strengthening bilateral relationship, Mudavadi commended Austria’s role in concluding the Memorandum of Understanding on Labour and Migration Cooperation, describing the agreement as a significant milestone that is helping connect Kenya’s skilled workforce with employment opportunities in the European country.

According to Mudavadi, the framework has created an organized and transparent pathway for qualified Kenyan professionals to access jobs in Austria, particularly in sectors facing labor shortages.

He said the agreement has already begun producing measurable results, especially in the healthcare sector, where Kenyan professionals have secured employment opportunities in Austria’s Carinthia region, including positions at KABEG Hospital.

“The Memorandum of Understanding on Labour and Migration Cooperation is a critical framework that has enabled Kenya’s youthful and skilled workforce to respond to Austria’s growing demand for qualified professionals,” Mudavadi said.

The Cabinet secretary also highlighted the success of the Austria Job Fair held in Nairobi last year, describing it as an important platform that connected Kenyan job seekers with potential employers while providing guidance on employment procedures abroad.

“I appreciate our successful collaboration in convening the Austria Job Fair in Nairobi last year. The event increased awareness of employment opportunities in Austria, particularly in the healthcare sector, while equipping prospective applicants with practical information on eligibility requirements, recruitment procedures, and available labour mobility pathways,” he said.

Mudavadi noted that labor mobility has become an increasingly important pillar of Kenya’s foreign policy as the government seeks to create employment opportunities for skilled professionals while ensuring safe, orderly, and regulated migration.

Beyond labor cooperation, the Foreign Affairs chief welcomed expanding academic partnerships between institutions in Kenya and Austria. He said collaborative initiatives under Erasmus+, Africa-UniNet, joint research projects, and other university partnerships continue to strengthen educational cooperation between the two countries.

According to Mudavadi, the academic exchanges are promoting innovation, research, knowledge sharing, and stronger people-to-people ties that will benefit future generations of students, researchers, and professionals.

He said such collaborations are helping build long-term institutional relationships while supporting scientific research and technological advancement in areas of mutual interest.

Mudavadi also expressed optimism about the future of Kenya-Austria relations, pointing to Austria’s recently launched Africa Strategy as evidence of the European nation’s renewed commitment to strengthening engagement with African countries.

He said the strategy provides a strong foundation for expanding cooperation across several strategic sectors that are important to Kenya’s economic transformation and development agenda.

“I am confident that this forward-looking framework will further strengthen cooperation in trade and investment, skills development, innovation, climate action, education, and people-to-people exchanges,” Mudavadi said.

The Cabinet secretary added that Kenya remains committed to deepening diplomatic and economic ties with Austria through partnerships that deliver mutual benefits for both countries. He said continued collaboration in labor migration, education, research, and investment would not only create employment opportunities for Kenyans but also strengthen bilateral relations and contribute to sustainable economic growth.

The growing partnership between Kenya and Austria reflects broader efforts by the Kenyan government to expand international cooperation, promote legal labor mobility, and position the country’s skilled workforce to compete in the global job market while fostering stronger diplomatic and economic ties with European partners.
